Mobile App Content Sparks Marketing Creativity

Playing with The Best Camera

Carne Asada Taco by Shelly BowenI’ve been playing with iPhone apps a lot lately: games, tools, resources. Sometimes friends tell me about the cool ones and sometimes I just browse the most popular ones while I’m doing something else, like waiting for a carne asada taco.

(Have you noticed I do my blogging at lunchtime?)

Mobile applications have really come a long way. Some act like Wii games (like Skee-Ball, where you can swing your whole arm to throw the ball), and some interact with the Web at large, like The Best Camera (self-dubbed a three part ecosystem of:

  • super-handy iPhone camera photo filter and sharing app,
  • online community of photos, and
  • a small book of iPhone photos I easily get lost within,

all created by photographer Chase Jarvis).

The Best Cam is definitely a great tool for the aspiring photographer in all of us. And judging from the popular photos feed, it attracts a lot of amazing photographer talent.

But I’m not a photographer. I’m a content strategist and consultant, a small business owner, a Web writer and editor, a creative problem solver. So how do I leverage The Best Cam?

How Businesses and Marketers Can Leverage The Best Camera

  1. Watching the roll of recent photos is inspiring: small glimpses into the rest of the real world breaks me away from the immediate routine.
  2. Viewing the flip of popular photos (you can rate them) is like taking a visual pulse on what’s interesting to people right now. Just like with Twitter, you can see what’s moving people. That’s powerful information for a marketer.
  3. It’s a quick way to edit photos in an interesting way for my blog, without opening Photoshop.

That said, I have a wish list for the smart people who no doubt are in the process of evolving The Best Cam ecosystem to make it even more useful to a broad audience. And a few content ideas for those of you creating your own mobile and Web experiences.

But that will have to wait until tomorrow. My taco has arrived.

  • Hey Shelly, did you notice the Best Camera shout-out on today’s dooce.com holiday list? Thought of you when I saw it. http://dooce.com/2009/11/30/holiday-him.

Thanks for the tips – I hadn’t found the recent photos feature, I’m excited to check it out. Jenny

  • Thanks for the shoutout Shelly! We’re really aiming to make Best Camera “the people’s” photo app, so we’re soliciting lots of feedback and plan on continuing to upgrade the app frequently. Thanks again for the nice writeup.

  • Dartanyan: it was a good taco.
Jenny: no, I hadn’t seen that list. Very cool. Turns out G already had all the photo apps and still likes Best Cam best.
Chase: super cool to hear! I’m having a great time with Best Cam (especially the showing it off to friends) and look forward to seeing it evolve.
