Smart SEO Isn’t Just in the Numbers

by Shelly Bowen

When you’re optimizing your Web site for search, success is clearly measured by high traffic numbers. And to get traffic, you need search engine page rank for your keywords and phrases. There are plenty of published SEO tactics out there that will help you do that.

But even a bazillion hits per day isn’t going to help your bottom line long-term if:

  1. The traffic isn’t your target customer. SOLUTION: If you’re getting a lot of traffic but not enough loyal customers, consider the keywords you’ve used to optimize your Web site. Are they attracting the right people?
  2. The highly ranked Web site pages that are getting the traffic aren’t designed to convert prospects into customers. SOLUTION: If certain pages on your site are getting a lot of traffic, but then the customer bounces away, consider modifying those pages to better compel the visitor to take action. This could mean writing persuasive copy that builds a stronger tie between the information on the page and the value your product or service provides. Or this could mean the Web site customer experience — layout, user interaction, marketing copy and tone — needs to be improved.

Basically, you’re analyzing the end-to-end customer experience. Matching the right SEO keywords with the right customer and driving them toward a valuable Web site content that compels them to take action … that’s smart SEO.

Your seasonal content strategy can also play a part in developing a strong keyword plan over time.
