17 Ways to Improve Your Web Content
You know it better than anyone. Your Web site is you. It’s what you wear. It’s how you sound. It’s how you smell. You want to smell nice, right?
I’d like to share some easy ways to improve your Web site content — that way, when I visit you, I’ll stay and sniff awhile. Below is a to-do list; over the next few weeks, I’ll go into more detail about each of them. Want an alert when they’re posted? Get my RSS feed. If you’d like more immediate and custom recommendations, just give me a call.
- Polish your title tags – See those words that are in the very top of the browser window? Those serve as a header on search engines. They should say what you are while using words that people search for.
- Refine your meta description — It’s not just for keywords; it’s for convincing people you’re the right description. Meta descriptions often show below your title tag header in a search.
- Say what you do for people — Amazing how often I’ll go to a site for the first time and have no idea what it’s for or why I should care.
- Give us a reason to believe you — If you say you’re the best spa in California, tell me why. Did you win an award for best massage, cleanest showers, what?
- Makes your images tell a story — What are your graphics saying? Ask your friends.
- Tell us what you want us to do first — It’s often called a call to action. There should be one primary call, and it should be visible … above the fold.
- Don’t compete with yourself — Too much going on on your homepage? Print it out. Then number them in order of priority to your business. Hand this over to your designer and copy writer.
- Give us a reason to come back
- Make it easy to read — Your design should not get in the way of legibility. Colors, font size, margins, ads can all enhance or detract from your message.
- Get new content and changes proofed — Hire a copyeditor to check for typos. Typos and inconsistencies are like having pesto sauce on your shirt.
- Make it easy to contact you if we need help or have questions
- It may sound obvious, but stay up to date, always. Nothing makes you seem like yesterday than yesterday’s content.
- Write like your customer speaks
- Be an expert in your industry — Provide helpful tips and tricks that relate or compliment your industry. Highly technical material? Get it peer-reviewed, and let us know you did.
- Date your content.
- Use RSS to stay in touch.
- Make it easy to share the value you provide with friends and family.
Do these things. You’ll smell nice.
